Welcome!
“Voice for the Poor (VFP) is the advocacy arm of the
Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Formerly, Voice of the Poor (VOP), the entity was renamed in 2024. Some VOP references remain on this website.
With members representing every section and
demographic of the nation, we identify those issues that are critical to those
living in poverty and need, and help bring attention to them so communities and
our elected representatives can help develop strategies and tactics that will
provide the most effective and efficient means to reduce or eliminate poverty.” (Source: U.S. Council)
“Voice of the Poor activities are a natural extension of our roles as Vincentians. Members of the Society serve on the front lines, in solidarity with the poor by providing food, shelter and other emergency services. However, lasting long-term assistance to the poor requires looking at the larger political and economic picture. Guided by the fundamentals of Catholic social teaching, VOP committee members research and evaluate issues and governmental policies. Positions on legislative items are first approved by the Diocesan Council Board. The Diocesan Board President serves as the Society’s official spokesperson. VOP works to educate Vincentians and decision-makers regarding the impact of legislation on the poor and marginalized.” (Source: Phoenix SVDP Council)
This website is intended as a resource site for Vincentians
and associates interested in advocacy on behalf of the poor, with emphasis on issues
affecting the poor locally and in northern California.
